I wrote for RendezView yesterday on domestic violence, homelessness, and how a great proportion of need and demand is under-counted. The Australian Institute of Health and Welfare data collection only counts numbers from government funded services.
Shelters like ours, along with many private foundations, local charities and other networks do work to support women and kids who are homeless or leaving domestic violence, and this support doesn’t count anywhere.
We can’t make good policy if we can’t get to grips with the scale of the need. Governments need to support organisations doing innovative work to help local communities address these issues for themselves.
